New Forest ponies are named after The New Forest which is located in Hampshire on the South Coast of England and spreads over 90,000 acres. Originally King William’s Royal Hunting Ground, it was turned over to the “commoners” in the 1800’s. These ponies are one of the recognized breeds of the Mountain and Moorland breeds of the British Isles. They have a rich history dating as far back as 1016. Originally wild in the New Forest, they came into private ownership around 1877 and in 1891 the Society for improvement of the New Forest Ponies was founded. The New Forest Pony today is bred all over Europe. While still few in number in the states, they are gaining popularity for their intelligence, versatility, and quiet, willing-to-please temperaments, not to mention sense of humor. Jacob's Hawk is a perfect example of the breed. He has competed and won in Dressage, Hunters, Jumpers, and placed in novice Eventing as well. He survived surgery last October that took 70 % of his Large Colon. He is an extemely loved pony.
